    Extra activities

    At the Indigenous Open Gardens over the weekend of 21 / 22 June there will be a number of “extra” activities for visitors to enjoy. These are spread across the gardens but the majority will be based at Garden No 2 – TWIMS, 74 Everton Road, Kloof.

    The events/features are as follows (details are being regularly updated):

    Mend-the-Molweni Project (Garden 3)

    Information on this important conservancy project addressing sewerage issues in Hillcrest and in the Molweni River.

    Lepidopterists Society of Africa (Lepsoc Africa) and Butterfly Gear- Garden 2 (in the old garden by the pool)

    Lepsoc Africa will have a stand with information on butterflies for enthusiasts. There will be caterpillars on display. Steve Woodhall (Butterfly Gear) will have his brand new book ‘My First Book of Caterpillars’ available for purchase. There will also be some caterpillars on display as well as a case of mounted butterflies.

    Wire and bead Garden Crafts by Simba Takavada and Carlsen Mangena – Garden 2

    Simba and Carlsen produce a wide handcrafted wire and bead garden ornaments featuring birds, mammals and flowers.

    Garden ornaments in recycled steel and other materials by Lazarus Kukakunesu – Garden 2

    Lazurus has skilled craftsmen producing a large range of large and medium sized items suitable for all gardens. Most are manufactured using recycled metal and other materials.

    Wildlife Photographs on canvas by Tim McClurg – Garden 3

    Tim McClurg is well known for his stunning wildlife photographs which have featured in many of Kloof Conservancy’s e-newsletters and articles in The Leopard’s Echo. Tim is now printing in large format on canvas and some of his work will be available for sale. Below are two examples of Tim’s work:

    Flora and Flora Trust Publications – Indigenous Gardening Books – Garden 4

    The Flora and Fauna Publications Trust was established in 1992 to raise sponsorship for the publication of popular, authoritative, affordable books on the indigenous plants of KwaZulu-Natal & and Eastern Region, with the object of stimulating greater care, awareness and understanding of our exceptionally rich environment. Since then the Trust has been instrumental in publishing some of the most important indigenous plant books mist of which have become essential reference books for gardeners.

    A team from the Trust including renowned author and doyen of indigenous gardening is KZN, Dr Elsa Pooley will be located at Garden No 4. Elsa will be on hand to provide advice to gardeners and to sign copies of the much anticipated new book South African Indigenous Garden Plants the gardeners guide which she co-authored with Geoff Nichols and Andrew Hankey.
